Richard's cutting board

A few months ago Richard was out and got started with his cutting board.  You can see it here!  The next step was to cut apart the board they had glued together and reassemble the pieces into a cutting board with the end grain showing.  Here you can see the completed board after it was glued together.  It was a bit rough from the assembly and there was glue showing which meant that it needed some sanding.
This is the beginning of the sanding process.  They used Brian's table top roller sander and got busy trying to get it even.  It was a fairly long process but the electric sander really helped a lot. Richard did the final sanding by hand using sand paper and a block.  Below, it has had its final sanding and it is time to put on the finish - a food grade finish that contains beeswax and linseed oil.

This is it!!  The final step!!  Richard had tested the final look by applying water which helps you see texture and colour of the different woods.
I really love the way it looks!!  Kale was all in there with the Jenga blocks because they were almost the same size as the pieces in the cutting board.

A successful project that taught them a few things that they will be doing differently the next time!!

Richard visit and the TV mount

Richard was out a few weeks ago to work on his cutting board so Brian took the opportunity to get some help to install the TV mount he had purchased.  It is a heavy duty one that allows movement in every direction as well as some lateral adjustment.  The box was larger and heavier than he expected when he went to pick it up and when he took it out of the box it was evident that it would require more assistance than I was going to be able to supply!!
It took a few hours and some well placed bolts but it is now up and functions perfectly!!  The TV is up over the shelf and leaves room beneath which at some point in time will be filled with some sort of speaker system.  In the meantime, the shelf will hold the remotes!!

A visit with the grand children!!

After reunion, Mina came for a visit - her first for summer holidays!!  We thoroughly enjoyed having the her over and we did lots of activities together.

Here Pepere is helping sort out a Marble Mania that Suzanne had dropped off earlier.  It was fairly complicated but the instructions were clear so Mina portioned out the pieces and Pepere put them where they belonged.
We took Mina to the Ellis Bird Farm.  Needless to say, her favorite part was the goats.  There were two large females and four small ones and she was able to get them to eat grass
from her hand.

She used the sidewalk chalks creatively on the large patch of asphalt out back, read books and rode her bike as well.  Pepere was preparing the poles needed for relocating the fence.

Mina and I had some crafting time as well.  We made these bracelets using paperclips, beads and a metal charm.  She worked diligently with her own idea and only needed a bit of help with the clasp.
We created these bottle cap necklaces as well.  We started with a few left over bottle caps that were leftover from reunion.  We experimented until we found a way to flatten them.  It would seem that bottle caps that have actually been crimped onto a bottle are more difficult to flatten than those that have not. We persevered and managed to flatten a few.  As you can see we kept a few as they were so we could fill them with interesting stuff.  We printed words off the internet, added beads and bling and then filled them with clear dimensional paint.  Once they were dry we added danglies and jump rings for attaching to the string.
Window clings!!  These were created using the leftover from my project of applying window cling to the basement windows so we could leave the curtains open for the light without feeling like we were in a fish bowl.  Worked very well!!  I bought the rolls at the dollar store so it was also inexpensive.  The leftover was about 5" wide and I thought they would make great window clings!! They do!  We drew our images on quarter sheets of scrap bond paper, placed our small pieces of window cling material over it and coloured our images with Sharpie markers!!  Worked perfectly!
Mina did a few free hand with a variety of themes.  I was more structured with mine and outlined them with black for a more stained glass look!!

We did make one card and I started several serendipity pieces.  The card got delivered to the kind neighbour that let us pick his nanking cherries and the serendipities are still on my desk - well dried by now.

Thursday night, Suzanne dropped off Kale.  That gave them the opportunity to have a weekend off and the chance for Kale to spend some time with us as well.  He played Duplos on the coffee table with Pepere quite a bit and was quite OK with playing the pick up game once it was time for bed.
Here they are both ready for bed having their bedtime snack.  Pepere toasted the waffles and I cut them to specifications!!  They waffles were soon gone and then it was off to bed.  They slept well and were not up any morning before 8 am.  Kale actually slept until after 11 am the first day so we just moved right into lunch.
Kale loved Pepere's trailer and liked climbing in and out of it.  The kids played with the spray bottles and made bubbles too.

One evening Mina and Kale found some time to play together in the family room while we were preparing supper.

Kale enjoyed the park - especially learning to climb the rope ladder, playing Duplos and checking out Pepere's garage - especially the tools and the buckets!!

Sunday evening Suzanne came for them and decided to stay the night to avoid the weekend traffic.  They next morning they did a good job of getting packed up and on the road.

It was a great visit!  We did take the rest of the day off and had subs for supper!!

Noel Reunion

We arrived in the afternoon on Friday and took some time meeting some of the others that were there that we had not met before and reconnecting with a few that we had not seen in a while. People continued to arrive over the course of the day.  We headed to town for supper and were fortunate to meet Victor and the girls and were joined by Stella and Gord.  It is what getting together is all about.

Friday evening was a time to recognize all the significant events in the family.  Mom and Dad had their 60th anniversary, Mom is turning 80, Yvonne was 65 that day.  There was cake and fruit for all.

Here we are at breakfast and Alberta Inn and Suites after a good nights sleep!!

Maria taught a painting class on Saturday morning. There was a lot of interest and the class was soon filled and everyone got started.

A time to catch up and reminisce by several of the older family members.  The weather was great and the venue had enough room for everyone.  There were motor homes, travel trailers and tents!!  The rest drove in from home or stayed at the hotels or BBB in town.

The raffles were very popular and everyone was in wanting to make sure they got the items they had their eye on in all the prize groups!!  Everything was finally meted out by the end of the evening on Saturday and many took home the items they had hoped they would.

Potluck supper went very well as had the pancake breakfast in the morning!!  They food was great and people pitching in to help wherever it was needed.
Attendance was very good - better than the last two I think.

I have volunteered for the organizing committee for the next one in 2017.  We have booked the same facility because it is central, reasonably priced and had everything we needed.

Fran & Mom

The Noel Reunion was on a couple weeks ago and Brian went to get Mom so she could attend with us!!  Fran came for a visit as well so it was great to have extended family in the house!!  It was a short visit but so nice to reconnect with Fran.  We drove out to the Angus Ridge Hall on Friday for the start of the reunion.

Concerts in the Park!

A new cultural event in town for the summer - Concerts in the Park for July and August on Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm behind the LMC!!  "Vintage" was the first band of the year and it was excellent!!!!  What a pleasant way to spend a warm summer evening.  We brought a picnic lunch and enjoyed it along with the entertainment.  We missed one and the other was rained out.

We were there last week for the Rock and Roll entertainment with Mina
The kids danced the night away and there was dancing going on by the older crowd as well.
Here is the group - Bizarro - that played rhythm and blues last night.  They were great!!  Another beautiful evening and some free entertainment.  They have been taking donations in hopes of keeping up the tradition next year.  This year, the events are being sponsored by a grant for cultural development.  There will be a  Dixie band there next week and there will be more until the end of August.  There has been a good turn out and there are a few vendors out there as well if you are feeling so inclined.

Sylvan Lake - Montreal Smoked meat sandwich

We decided to visit Sylvan Lake on the Canada Day weekend as well.  We had found a newly opened deli that was serving Montreal Smoked Meat sandwiches when we were out house hunting last year and decided to look them up again!!  They are now licensed and serving poutine as well!!  You can check them out here on their Face book page.  They are called Angelozzi's and are located on 46 Street in Sylvan Lake.  We highly recommend them. The food is very good and reasonably priced!!
We checked out the beach while we were in town!!  Lots of people there  - every inch of beach was occupied!!  Lots of families enjoying a day out!!
Here is a bronze statue of a mermaid which is near the deli!!

Canada Day!!

We started our Canada Day off with breakfast at the Coop Mall.  This year we decided to start out a little earlier to beat the crowds - worked out perfectly!!  Breakfast was good and the entertainment was excellent.  The kids were digging for money again this year.  It is a wonderful distraction as their parent wait in line for breakfast.  A mid morning we headed downtown for the parade.  A nice short one this year - the pipers and the fire truck!!  We ended up at the Legion where the dignitaries and the veterans reminded us of the privilege we have been given of living in a free country.
This year they added the firing of a cannon which was very cool!!  Not sure who the gentlemen were but the cannon was very loud and we were really close.  I love our small town.
We thought it would have been neat to have a fly past - any aircraft would have been fine.  Maybe we will suggest it for next year.
On our way home from the parade we met the neighbours who had company and were getting ready to BBQ a few hamburgers and invited us to join them.
At 11 pm we watched the fireworks from the bedroom windows which gave us an excellent view. Last year the large poplars on the boulevard blocked some of the view - not this year because most of them came down in the July hail storm last summer.
A great day!!

Brian's fishing trip

Brian took a fishing trip to BC with Bob, our next door neighbour, in June!!  I have been waiting to get his photos off of his computer to put this post together.

He dug through the garage and managed to find most of his fishing gear some of which is no longer usable such as barbed hooks!  It has been YEARS since he went fishing.  So he bought what he thought he would need and Bob agreed to share what he might be missing.

They headed to Nakusp, BC on Arrow Lake where they had a cottage rented at Bear Ridge Cabins.  It took all day to get there and they only had a small delay when they blew a tire on the boat trailer.
The scenery was awesome and the weather cooperated!!

They got out and took a closer look when they spotted this black bear near the highway!!
This is Bob's truck, boat and trailer!!

 This is Bob!

The cabins at Bear Ridge Campground at Nukusp, BC on Arrow Lake!!

They fished for two days along with one of Bob's friends from Lacombe who was vacationing in the area with his wife.  They tried lots of places on the lake and several different lures but to no avail - they did not catch any fish!!  The trip was good!!
