A visit with Richard (end grain cutting board)

Richard visited a while back and we decided to try out the nachos that Katherine made while we were there.  Tortilla chips, peppers, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, olives, spicy ground beef and a bit o cheese.  It was excellent!!!
Here we are all ready to devour our feast!!
Here is the project they are working on.  End grain cutting boards!!  Brian bought the wood for them before we left Ontario and the planks came in the move - walnut, maple and birch.  Here is the first glue - they brought it in the house to dry because it was still a bit cool out there.  This piece will be cut up into strips and they will be glued together so the end grain is showing and create a nice mosaic pattern.
Here they are in the garage.  It was a great opportunity to try out all the tools that Brian had taken time to reassemble last fall - the table saw, the jointer and the planer.  They all worked perfectly!!
Here is the bread Richard made while he was here!!  It was so good!!  He left us the leftovers and so we made sandwiches and toast.
The next day we made bacon, tomato and cheese sandwiches for supper with the last of it!!

Brown Bread Buns

I made some sourdough brown bread from a recipe I got from Mom.  Brian really likes it when we go home and Mom has this bread out so I thought I would give it a try.  It included rye flour which is a first for me.  I like they way they turned out!!  Am bringing the buns along to Maria's tomorrow!!

Here is the recipe for Mom's Brown Bread.

In an eight cup bowl
1 cup of sourdough
1 cup of warm water
Blend together the following and add
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup rye flour
2 tsp of yeast
Let rise for 30 minutes

In a 3 quart bowl
2 cups of white flour
1 cup of fresh stone ground whole wheat flour
OR use 3 cups of commercial whole wheat flour
1 cup of rye flour
1/2 cup of bran (optional)

In a small pan,
3/4 cups of water
1/2 cup of mashed potato (previously frozen is fine)
1 1/2 tsp of salt
1/4 cup of honey or molasses
2 tbsp of fat or oil
dash of vinegar
Warm to melt honey, cool to warm and add to flour
Add yeast mixture to flour as well
Stir to incorporate flour
Knead until you have a nice dough

Grease bowl, and let rise until double.
Form into loaves or buns and let rise until double.
Bake in 350F oven for 35 minutes for loaves, 25 minutes for buns.
