Pancake syrup!

I was blessed to be able to pick some nanking cherries in the neighbourhood recently so I made some syrup for those who shared with me those berries.  I have given them each a small jar of syrup and have a few for myself.
I picked some chokecherries as well.  They are free for the taking in lots of places around town.  I picked a pail full and made a half dozen small jars of pancake syrup with the juice!!  It will be a treat to have a few more choices this year.
I will be picking high bush cranberries as well.  They are well on their way to being ripe.

LIbrary books - More Gaelic history books

A few more Cora Harrison books about the Brehon of the Burren in Ireland in the 1500's.  Lots of history regarding the law of the land in those days and the cases that Mara has to solve.  Very good reading!

The Four Doors - a book about making your life worth the  living.  We are all blessed with free will - the freedom to choose our thoughts, words and deeds which create our life.  When our choices are informed by love we are happier and bring forth the best in ourselves and everyone around us.

Yvette and Natalie

Yvette is on the move!!  She is headed to Bow Island to be closer to Natalie.  Her house sold she moved last weekend.  We were there to pick up the last of the items for Kijiji and to say Au Revoir!!  I am sure she will be happy with her new place and is in the process of unpacking and getting settled in.  I am so happy for her and it will be good for the whole family to have Yvette closer to her loved ones!!

Mom

Mom was in town for her followup appointment so Brian and I took the time to go and have supper with family.  Mom is dong well and looks really good.  They will have to wait until next week for more details on the next step but it was great to see her and get a chance to visit a bit.  Time goes by so quickly though and we were sound "on the road again"!  Loraine and Alyx declined the photo op!!

Dragonfly!

This large dragonfly landed on the willows out back on the weekend I took the opportunity to take a few photos. This was the best one!!  I would have preferred to be able to feature it wings a bit better but there you go, maybe next time!

Canoing at The Narrows

We took the opportunity last weekend to go canoeing again!  We visited "The Narrows" provincial park.  It is located on a narrow channel that links Buffalo Lake to a small bay near Mirror.  We put the the canoe in the water from the gravel boat launch but later found that there were other places we could have used with wooden structures.  It was much busier than we expected with quite a few of the campsites full.  There were children playing and boats tied up ready to go fishing.  As you can see it is quite reedy with no real beach area though the channel was deep enough for motorboats to navigate from one

body of water to the other.
It was a beautiful day, very calm and so it was a pleasure to be out in the canoe.

We did the smaller bay first and now that I look at the map I see that we missed a smaller bay off of that one. Will do that next time.

On the far end of the bay we spied some large white birds landing so we went and checked them out.  It was a couple of pelicans which took flight when we got closer than they were comfortable with.  We found this egg floating in the water.  Pretty cool!!  It was quite large and had obviously been floating around for a while considering how much of the shell was coated with the green film.  I put it in the canoe and pondered bringing it home but upon reconsideration I decided that there may be laws against that so I put it back in the water.  I wonder if it might have been a pelican egg?  Certainly, all the other birds we saw were not large enough to have laid this size of egg.  It was unfortunate that the quiet was disturbed by the sound of a boom box on the shore.  I am sure they were not aware of exactly how far the sound carries over the water.
It was great to be on the water and though it was a 40 minute car ride to get there it was worth it.

Library books by Cora Harrison

These are the newest series of books I have been reading.  They are stories about a Brehon (judge) who administers justice in the 1500's in a small kingdom in Ireland.  Very well written and very educational in the law, the process of solving crimes, the process of applying the law to those who have not upheld it,  and the historical aspects of life in an Irish kingdom.

Sunflowers

The volunteer sunflowers that came up from the compost I put on the flower beds are doing very well.  I have been able to pick a vase full several times now.  It is really nice to have fresh flowers in the house!!

Blueberries!!

I went and picked blueberries at Moose Lake with Madeleine and Robert.  I spend the first afternoon with Mom doing a few things that needed doing before her surgery.  It was a great day of blueberry picking and visiting with Madeleine and Robert.  It started out quite rainy so we took our time getting out to the berries and picked just after lunch and made it back just before a big rain shower.  We headed back out late afternoon, had some supper and headed out again.  I managed two and half pails which was great!!!!  Madeleine and Robert were camping out there and had managed to fill their little cooler!!    Therese

Library books!

A few more library books!!  We usually have books on the go to read for a bit before bed and for bits of time during the day when we have a bit of time - like when we are watching the fire!!
Trust your Eyes is a book Brian read before I did and deals with a special needs person who is obsessed with a street mapping application like Google Maps which allows him to "walk" the cities of the world. When his father dies his brother has to find a way to make changes that work for both of them and they are involved in the solving of a murder in the midst of it all.
Silent Night is another in the series about a detective in Boston.  All ways good!
Sacred Cows is a story about a female journalist who is involved in solving crimes on a university campus.  A good story with a different perspective!

Roasting a few hot dogs!

Our first fire of the season!!  We just decided the other night to have a fire and roast a few hot dogs!! It was great to sit outside and read our books as the fire burned out some to the point where we could roast our hot dogs for supper.  We are really happy with using the concrete pad out back for the fire pit!!  Therese

Canoeing at Alix Lake

It has been busy!!  Since this spring I have been selling items for Yvette on Kijiji so that has taken some time and has provided her with some cash. I went and picked raspberries at her house and we brought back a few more things to sell.  Victor dropped by for a visit on his way to Calgary.  It was nice to see him again and we had the chance to catch up.  There have been a few trips to prepare for Mom's surgery.  Brian has been busy with the building committee preparing to build a new church.  He has prepared a business plan with the hours of research and consulting that has required.  There have quite a few meetings as well.  I have been helping my friend, Paula, as well with her out of town garden.
Our first time out with the canoe this year!!  We decided we were just going so took time for an afternoon of canoeing out at Alix Lake.  We discovered the boat launch which made getting on to the water a breeze!!
We hauled the canoe out of the water at the swimming area and had our lunch on the beach!! It was a wonderful day though a bit on the windy side so we took the opportunity to test our paddling skills by crossing the lake against the wind.
We found some interesting things to look at on our paddle around the lake.  Here are some beautiful yellow water lilies.  At the far end we found this little cove where the water was calm and had a beautiful reflection of the cattails.

On the way back we worked our way through the buoys which we expect have been used for water skiing but we are not sure.  It was fun to challenge ourselves to keeping the canoe between the buoys!
We did not see too much wildlife but we did see this family of ducks.

It took us a few hours to paddle the lake and take a lunch break and we made it back to the boat launch a bit tired and ready to be off the lake.

It was great to be canoeing again and we hope to make that happen a few more times this summer.

Saskatoons!

On July 22, Sylvia and I went and picked saskatoons in Stony Plain.  There were none available in this area because frost in early spring compromised the blossoms.  The berries were beautiful and it was a wonderful day so we picked 5 pails ($12) in a few hours.  Here is the info for Saskatoon Valley Orchards.  They have lots of bushes and several varieties.  We picked Thiessens.  It was a fun day and I picked them very clean so that freezing them would be really easy!!

Fun with the kids

There was lots of time for playing at home too!  Here they are setting up a challenge game with the wood blocks and the balls to see which ones went the farthest.  We spent some time at the school play ground as well. They loved the round swings.  You can see in the background that the work is progressing on the arena and a large crane was on hand to place the prefab concrete walls for the new dressing rooms.

Lacombe Days started just before they left so we took in the free BBQ at Sun FM. The kids got tattoos and won a few prizes by spinning the big prize wheel after lunch.

On their final morning we took the kids for a walk around Cranna Lake while Katherine finished up the packing and loaded it all in the van.  They were headed to Gravelbourg for a family reunion and then back home to St. Adolphe on Sunday.  Gil came with his Mom and Dad and I am sure the kids were all happy to see their him.

It was a great visit and we had such good weather for all of it!!

Ellis Bird Farm

The kids really enjoyed their visit to Ellis Bird Farm.  The tractors were a bit hit!!
They also spent quite some time scooping bugs and tiny fish out of the pond and putting them in the large containers to be examined more closely.  Once this got to be less fun and them a bit more silly we headed to the main building and had our picnic lunch.
Everyone took a good look at the goats as well.  Several of the goats share birthdays with Neomie and Katherine!!  The chickens were all in the coup this year so we did not get to see them up close.

Going to the lake!

We spent quite a bit of time at the lake while Katherine was here.  The kids had just finished their last day of swimming lessons the day they left home and they were keen to practice what they  had learned.
We spent an afternoon at the beach/camping resort in Alix.  The swimming area was not large but deep enough though the large amount of weeds in the midsection of the area made swimming difficult and the weeds were not fun on the feet.
Sylvan Lake was nice.  The barrier made the access to the water about a foot deep right off the bat.  The water was nice and clear though and we were grateful for some shade on the beach which allowed Amelyn to stay out of the sun and she played contentedly on the blanket while the others played in the water.

Gull Lake was fun because the kids could go out further without getting too deep. They all wore their life jackets and had a wonderful time jumping around and practicing their strokes.

The weather was great everyday so we went back a couple of times to the beach at Gull Lake.  It is so close to home.

It was great that we could all pile into the van and therefore only take one vehicle!

Katherine and kids visit - Tyrell Museum

We met Katherine at the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller on the first day of her visit.  She arrived mid afternoon and it was quite a hot day.  We started our tour inside but found the kids had too much energy so we took them out on the outdoor hike which was a bit of a challenge for all of us because of the heat.  We headed back inside for supper and then finished off our inside tour after supper and took a final photo with the dinosaurs before we headed home.   Therese

Yard tour in mid July

The black currants are already fairly dark though still quite firm. I  asked Mom when they will be ready to be picked and she said about the same time as the raspberries in July.  I ended up picking them in early August  - 2 cups or so - and made juice which I put in the freezer to use with apple juice from the process of  making applesauce.

The nankings are doing very well and I have picked a few here and there! I finally picked them all in early August as well.  I had about 30 or so which I ate.  I picked Ken's bush as well and combined them with several containers I had picked on my walks in the mornings and made two containers of juice for Mom and Dad.  The nankings are super abundant this year.

This is a the blue bell flowers I got from Alison this spring.  She removed all of hers and replaced them with la wide variety of lilies.  They will  stay in his bed until the walk gets put in and then they will be moved to a more permanent home.  They like to self seed so I anticipate I will have a larger patch before they get moved.

These are the new day lilies I inherited off of Kijiji last fall.  I did not know what colours they would be.  They are two beautiful pinky rose colours.  One set just a bit larger than the others.

The orange lilies were spectacular this year.  Loaded with blooms and very colourful!!  The white lily in the front is also on I inherited off of Kijiji and it made a huge flower head.  The ones surround it did not bloom so I will have to wait until next year before I know what colour they are going to be.

The coleus in the front are doing well.  Some of the ones I transplanted too close to the hostas have been overtaken by them and are now hidden under them. Most are still doing find under there!!    I will be taking cuttings from the coleus to root plants for the winter.  Only one of the large hostas (left) bloomed this year.  Not sure why but hopefully the other will next year.  The stained glass one grew much bigger this but did not bloom.

With the quantity of rain this year all the plants are doing well.  I still have to water right next to the garage because due to the direction of the storms that area often gets missed.
